Excellent, WTG :)
Hi Ewe, My name is Marty and I saw Your Question to Abby. Please allow me to reply that (1) Ericson 27 is a Great Boat, hard to beat all-around.(2) Any boat that has a boom that is substantially lower at the tack than at the clew will pretty much not even need a vang; the foot of the main angling down stretches out and prevents the outboard end from lifting. So if she has an old style block and tackle in addition to her mainsheet and traveller, the old style block and tackle is functioning more as just a preventer, to pull the boom forward and help prevent the boom from coming across in an unintended jibe. There is absolutely no reason why U couldn't make your mainsail with a higher clew if U needed more headroom in the cockpit for example.I just did that to a Coronado 41.Once the angle between the LUFF and the FOOT of the sail becomes less than about 86 degrees, U need whats called a jackline added to the tack area of the sail. Same thing that most Boomed Staysails have; otherwise the luff slides will get tighter as U drop the sail and maybe even rip. Jackline works by stretching tight when the sail is up and by getting loose when the sail is stowed.A Jackline is not the same thing as Lazy Jacks, they catch the sail when it's dropped.(3) I don't use my name when posting to Abby because I want the blog to remain NON COMMERCIAL. I certainly don't mind if Her sponsors advertise, they are cutting some big checks these days.If U google Marty Spargur I am available to answer questions, but I will likely recommend U ask a local rigger or sailmaker that U trust, local is always better. I love the name of Your boat, the world needs more Joy. Thanks, Marty
